The ancient Mayan Ruins of Xunantunich,
Cahal Pech, El Pilar, Caracol, and Tikal await you when
staying at Royal Mayan Resort and Spa. The sparkling
waterfalls of the Thousand Foot Falls and the Rio on Falls
& Pools, are uniquely situated in the Mountain Pine Ridge
area for your easy access. Maybe it's Canoeing
on the Macal River or tubing on the Mopan River that you might
want to try, whatever catches your attention, those are just
two of the many activities you'll enjoy when staying here. You
might want to become an explorer and go through the Caves at
Rio Frio or Che Chem Ha or go horsebackriding through the Maya
Mountain Foothills. But if you are a naturalist - sighting
many of the over 200 species of birds, colorful butterflies,
and exotic flowers and trees might just get your attention.

1. Xunantunich Ruin
Site:
XUNANTUNICH: "The Stone Maiden" Accessible by a
hand cranked ferry across the Mopan River, this ruin
site is one of the tallest in Belize. "El Castillo" a
pyramid rising over 130 feet from the main complex is
well worth the climb. With panoramic views of Belize
& near by Guatemala. This tour is only minutes away.
Approx. 2 hours.
2. Butterfly
Farm/Nature Trail Walk:
Look into the
wondrous life cycle of the butterfly. An early morning
arrival might give you a chance to watch a butterfly
emerge from a pupa right before your eyes. Then on to
the nature trail where you can see the habitat of these
beautiful creatures. Also an excellent birding trip!
3. Mopan River -
Canoeing, Tubing or Kayaking:
Canoe, Tube or Kayak
this beautiful jade green river. Here you might glimpse
a jaguar, tapir or howler monkey taking an early morning
or late afternoon drink. See iguana's sunning or watch a
wide variety of birds along the banks.
4. Souvenir
Shopping:
A morning or
afternoon shopping trip to many of the arts & crafts
shops of the Cayo District, allowing you the opportunity
to purchase (memories) of your Belize trip.
5. Guanacaste
Park:
So named for the
Guanacaste tree. One of Central America's tallest trees
species, growing over 130 feet. This small park of some
52 acres houses an abundance of flora & fauna. An
excellent spot for a stroll in the rainforest, a cool
swim or bird watching!! About an 1 1/2 drive each way.
6. Ix Chel Farm
(Panti Medicine Trail):
Named for a bush
doctor, Don Eligio Panti who passed on in 1996 at the
age of 103. This self-guided tour takes in a wide range
of healing plants. Many of them used in modern medicine
today. A 5 mile trip taking approx. 30 minutes. May not
be accessible during the heavy rainy season.
7. Cahal Pech Ruin
Site:
"Place
of Ticks" Certainly not how the elite families who ruled
here in Classic times would have known it. This site
gives you a great insight of how the well-to-do lived.
Most of what is seen dates back to the late ninth
century AD. A 3 mile trip taking approx. 20 minutes.
8. Horseback Riding:
This
guided tour takes you along the foothills of the Maya
Mountains following trails through the jungle to view
remains of ancient civilizations. Cold, clear mountain
streams combined with semi-tropical rainforests and
wildlife, makes this an adventure to remember. 1/2 day
early morning tour.

1. Chechem Ha Cave:
A 45
minute walk mostly uphill to the cave entrance. The
unassuming entrance opens into a vast area of winding
limestone passageways and tall, narrow rooms littered
with ancient pottery. A ladder allows access to the
upper areas of the cave & in some cases ropes are
used for narrow passages. The end of the cave opens into
a large room believed to be used for sacrificial
ceremonies. The evidence is still visible. A certain
degree of fitness is required. 1/2 hour drive from resort.
2. El Pilar Ruin
Site:
Dating back to 250 B.C., this site is one
of the country's largest Classic Maya sites, stretching
over 50 acres. Much still being excavated today. 15
plazas have been mapped already making this an important
site with temples, palaces & a ball court. A
mysterious man-high wall seems to run indefinitely west.
Perhaps an ancient link to Guatemala's Tikal. A 10 mile
trip taking approx. 40 minutes. A 3 1/2 hour
tour.
3. Barton Creek Cave:
An
ancient Maya Burial Site, accessible only by canoe. A
river trip to this incredible cave site is filled with
Stalagmites & Stalactites of all shapes &
colors. A 10 mile trip taking approx. 40 minutes. A 3-4
hour tour.
4. Mtn. Pine Ridge/1000 ft Water
Fall:
A 300 square mile reserve where you will
find a scenic combination of pine forest, mountain
streams, lush river valleys, caves & water falls.
Most notable is Hidden Valley Falls (1000 ft falls)
which is actually 1600 ft. This is an excellent place
for bird watching. A 35 mile trip taking approx. 1 1/2
hours.
Tour can be extended to include Rio
Fro Cave & Rio On Pools with picnic lunch &
swimming. Will count as 2 tours. (full
day)
5. Mountain Biking (Trail Map
Incl'd).
6. Bird Watching @ Aguacate
Lagoon w/stop at Spanish Lookout (4 pax min) less than 4

"Snail Shell" is the tallest ruin in
Belize, slightly taller than " El Castillo" at
Xunantunich. Its base being larger than that of Tikal in
Guatemala covers more than 5 sq. miles, much still under
excavation today. In its prime it was home to some
200,000 people, the total population in all of Belize
today. Most noted is a ballcourt marker discovered in
1986 describes the defeat of Tikal in 562 AD &
Caracol's reign for more than a century. A 60 mile trip
over rough roads takes approx. 3 hours. This is an all
day tour and may not be accessible during the heavy
rainy season.
3. Tikal (Full Day)

An early morning departure to the
Guatemala Border and a 1 1/2 hour drive onto Tikal.
Located in the Peten area, it is one of the most
spectacular Mayan Sites set in the deep high canopy
jungle. An abundance of birds, monkeys and wildlife. The
flora & fauna of the area is almost as grand as the
site itself. This is a long but thoroughly fascinating
day.

Royal Mayan Lodge Extension
|
| The Royal Mayan Lodge located in western Belize atop a hill between the villages of Succotz and Benque Viejo overlooking the Mopan River. The most spectacular feature of the Royal Mayan is the incredible view of "El Castillo", of the Mayan site of Xunantunich which rises from the dense foliage just across the Mopan River. It sits at the same level as the Royal Mayan Lodge! Royal Mayan will serve as our comfortable base for our guided visit to nearby Xunantunich or/and Tikal.
4 days/3 nights (post-trip from Blackbird Caye) ITINERARY
Day 1: Following your Blackbird expediton, you will be picked up in Belize City and transferred to Royal Mayan Lodge (approximately 2 hours). Arrive at the lodge in time for lunch. Afternoon on your own to relax, hike, or join an optional tour or activity available at the lodge (additional cost – sign up and pay at the resort).
Day 2: Tikal: After breakfast, full-day guided tour to Tikal Mayan Ruins in Guatemala. Belizean style lunch will be prepared in the morning to take on the excursion. Return to the lodge in time for dinner. Relaxing evening and overnight at the lodge..
Date 3: Xunantunich: After breakfast, half-day guided tour to Xunantunich Mayan Ruins. Return to the lodge in time for lunch. Afternoon at leisure, dinner, relaxing evening, or , or join an optional tour or activity available at the lodge (additional cost – sign up and pay at the resort). Overnight at the lodge..
Day 4: An early morning breakfast, then transfer to the Belize City International Airport in time for your flight home.
